Reuter and Hamilton 1.jpg

Invited artist: GREG REUTER and
JOSHUA HAMILTON

This work is a result of a collaboration between poet Joshua Hamilton and sculptor Greg Reuter.  Joshua first visited Greg’s studio to take in the various materials, forms, and processes taking shape there.  Afterwards, he wrote a poem which Greg arranged to read like the grooves on an LP record in Adobe Illustrator.  Then, Greg took the file to a laser cutter and cut it into a pine wood stamp. The next step was to vacuum form heated plastic over the stamp. Lastly, Greg mounted the plastic to a foam disc representing a turntable, thus completing the sculpture Faceted Fox.

Growing up in California in the ’60s with a love of music and surfing, Greg Reuter started his career as an artist in Hawaii where he went to graduate school and received an MFA in sculpture and ceramics from the University of Hawaii. After graduation, he worked for a time as a studio potter both in Washington state and California.

In 1978 Greg moved to Texas and began teaching at Corpus Christi State University (now Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi). In 2018 Greg retired from 40 years of teaching. He continues working in his home studio in Corpus Christi. In addition to making sculpture, Greg has returned to his roots working with clay, with a focus on alternative firing processes.

Shown nationally and internationally, his work is represented in numerous public and private art collections including the Art Museum of South Texas. Greg has lectured and exhibited in Germany, Mexico, Japan, and the United States. His sculpture was used in the Hollywood film D.O.A., in which Greg made several brief appearances.
