When I was asked to make a record about moments of wonder in my life, I thought of the worn ‘the best of Leonard Cohen’ record I had saved without owning a working record player. Somewhere in late 2000, I was standing in the desert of Australia in front of a small cave.
It was early in the morning before the heat would take charge. I played this record on my disc-man and watched the sun come up over the rocks. 24 years later, I was filming a video-work in the Arctic desert of Svalbard, close to the North Pole. I was laying on the ground in the strange Martian-like landscape we were visiting for the day, and thought about this other moment in time, seemingly centuries ago.
The camera was panning by, as I realized that these moments were connected to each other through time and space. I had even called my new video triptych ‘The Desert Here and the Desert Far Away’, a line I had shamelessly borrowed from Cohen’s song ‘Democracy’ on the ‘The Future’ record. So I worked with the actual record to create this record of ‘2 Moments of wonder in time and space’ which became the title for the work. There is a small grey spot, below the video still I worked into the record, made from actual sand from that location.
